Adam Levine's "I Hate This Country" Comment on The Voice Sparks Scandal

USMagazine, Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 7:30am (PDT)

Adam Levine may have a new love in his life -- Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal -- but he's also got some fresh controversy. On the Tuesday, May 28 elimination episode of The Voice, the veteran mentor was unhappy after two of his contestants, Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons, were shown the door.

"I hate this country," muttered Levine, 34, whose singer Amber Carrington is now the only surviving Team Adam contestant left standing. The response on Twitter was quick and brutal -- with some fans questioning the Maroon 5 frontman's patriotism. "Someone is gonna get fired for leaving @adamlevine's mic on," wrote one fan. "Does @adamlevine get deported?" wondered another.

"If Christina [Aguilera] woulda said "I hate this country" like Adam did today, ppl woulda tweet her so much hate but since it's Adam everything is cool," complained another.

But Levine defended himself with Tweets -- and definitions -- of his own.

"joke- noun 1. something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement, as a witticism, a short and amusing anecdote, or prankish act," he wrote past midnight on Wednesday. "hu·mor·less (hymr-ls) adj. 1. Lacking a sense of humor. 2. Said or done without humor."

The dictionary-minded tweets continued. "light·heart·ed Function: adjective 1 : free from care, anxiety, or seriousness : happy-go-lucky 2 : cheerfully optimistic . . . mis·un·der·stand Pronunciation: \(?)mi-?s?n-d?r-?stand\ Date: 13th century 1 : to fail to understand 2 : to interpret incorrectly."
