Chris Brown Says He'll "Never" Hit Rihanna Again: "She Knows My Heart"

USMagazine, Monday, April 1, 2013, 9:30am (PDT)

Chris Brown's redemption tour continues. Four years after his infamous February 2009 assault on Rihanna, the controversial singer is attempting to restore his reputation -- just in time for the summer release of his new album, X. The latest stop on his road to forgiveness? The Today show, where he opened up to Matt Lauer about what he learned from the incident and swore to never repeat the same mistake.

"For me, you know, I've been humbled by the whole experience," the 23-year-old R&B star told Lauer on Monday, April 1. "From me losing everything, you know, to me having to regain public opinion or whatever it is. But most importantly, you know, knowing that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to apologize to Rihanna and be that man that can be a man, you know?"

Brown said that "everything's good" between him and the "Diamonds" singer, despite recent rumors claiming that the two had split. "We're fine," he assured Lauer.

"I think it's just me proving myself once again and also me just being a man, and knowing what I did was wrong and never doing it again," he explained of their 2012 reunion, noting that his 52 weeks of domestic-violence counseling had made him see the error of his ways. "As far as me and her concerned, she knows my heart and I know her heart. I'm not really focused on the negative."

Speaking of the negative, Brown also addressed his recent fights with fellow musicians Frank Ocean and Drake. After Lauer pointed out that those incidents -- and others like them -- contradict the singer's claim that he's a changed man, Brown admitted that he's still evolving.

"For me, it's just a learning process," he said. "You know, I have to just take it one day at a time. I can't make everybody like me."

"It's just about me being positive," he continued. "And everything that I'm doing with my music is hopefully to inspire the world, to inspire people who have been in my situation -- or even anybody who's trying to learn from me."
