How Katie Holmes Changed During Tom Cruise Marriage

Katie Holmes' marriage to Tom Cruise was literally a fairytale come true. In an October 2004 interview, the actress, who was engaged to actor Chris Klein from 2003 to 2005, told Seventeen magazine, "I think every little girl dreams about her wedding. I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise."

And while all things were sunny and exciting at first (does Cruise's couch-jumping incident in 2005 on Oprah ring a bell?), it was apparent that the many trappings of being married to Cruise, now 50, took its toll on the cheerful actress, who first became a star at age 20 as Joey on Dawson's Creek.

Exhibit A: Holmes' disheveled hair, halfhearted smile and pigeon-toed stance at the L.A. premiere of her small screen flick, The Kennedys, on March 28, 2011. One look at the star suggested that she was close to the point of total exhaustion.

At the same time, the actress couldn't help but be tempted by the Hollywood life, and it really affected her, style-wise. "You get exposed to Hermes…you feel the difference," she once said. In 2008, she launched her own clothing line, Holmes & Yang, with her longtime friend and stylist Jeanne Yang.

Since Holmes, now 33, who had secretly been renting an NYC apartment for her and their daughter, Suri, 6, filed for divorce on June 28, the details on the couple's deteriorating, five year-long marriage have started to surface.

In one tidbit that Us Weekly learned exclusively, Cruise had forbade his wife to do a Dawson's Creek reunion.

"[Producers] were begging her to sign on for a reunion movie," a source tells the new issue of Us (out now). "Tom said absolutely no way and thought going backward would be bad."

Holmes, on the other hand, "didn't care how 'low-brow' he thinks Dawson's Creek is," the source adds. "She wanted to do the movie and reconnect with her fans. And have fun -- something she rarely does anymore."
