'Idol' judges back Lauren Alaina to win finale

The Associated Press, Tuesday, May 24, 2011, 5:16pm (PDT)

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- If it were up to the judges, Lauren Alaina would be crowned the next "American Idol."

The chipper 16-year-old pop-country princess of Rossville, Ga., faced off against Scotty McCreery in three individual performances on the Fox talent competition Tuesday.

After the performances, the show's panel backed Alaina to win the grand prize.

Jennifer Lopez says Alaina's rendition of the new song, "Like My Mother Does," may have won her the competition.

McCreery, the deep-voiced 17-year-old country crooner of Garner, N.C., was still in it to win it on the Nokia Theatre stage with his own possible future single, "I Love You This Big."

Randy Jackson says his range on the tune was great because he "sung really low and really high."

The 10th season's winner will be revealed Wednesday.
