National Enquirer's Whitney Houston Casket Pic: Did They Go Too Far?

Did inquiring minds really need to know -- and see -- this?

The National Enquirer published -- on its cover -- a photo of the late Whitney Houston in an open casket, reportedly taken during one of the beloved singer's private funeral services last weekend.

Media outlets worldwide have decried the tabloid's shocking "last photo" as "morbid" and "shameful." The magazine has not disclosed who exactly took the controversial photo of the Grammy-winning "I Will Always Love You" singer, who died Feb. 11 at age 48.

"I thought it was beautiful," claimed National Enquirer's publisher, Mary Beth Wright, to FoxNews.com.

PHOTOS: Whitney Houston, 1963-2012

The tabloid has published photos of deceased stars before, with similar pics of Elvis Presley in 1977, and John Lennon in 1980.
