Mr. and Mrs. Toth put on a united front on Sunday. The same day that news broke that Reese Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth had been arrested in Atlanta for DUI (Toth) and disorderly conduct (Witherspoon), the spouses of two years didn't stay in hiding -- instead facing the cameras together for the NYC premiere of Witherspoon's new film Mud.
Handsome and professional in a suit, CAA agent Toth, 41, held hands with his actress wife, 37, as they arrived for the Cinema Society premiere at MOMA; newly brunette Witherspoon looked slightly withdrawn but flawless and pretty in a short black sheath.
As the Oscar winner posed for photographers on the red carpet, Toth retreated in the background and stayed busy checking his phone. Witherspoon declined to speak with reporters on the carpet, but according to an onlooker, she perked up when encountering her Mud costars Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Paulson, and happily chatted with film producers and their wives as well.
Inside the screening, the mother of three was introduced with the rest of the cast -- and got the loudest reception from the crowd. "She seemed touched and happy," an onlooker says. The couple left the screening soon thereafter, skipping the afterparty.
In a Sunday statement, Witherspoon said she was "deeply embarrassed" and "very sorry" for her angry exchange with an arresting officer in Atlanta on Friday, in which Toth was booked for DUI, while she was charged with disorderly conduct. "The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am," said the star, who reportedly said, "Do you know my name? . . . You're about to find out who I am."
