As news of Robin Gibb's death spread Sunday, stars like Gavin DeGraw and Robin Thicke shared their favorite memories of the Bee Gees tenor with Us Weekly. Gibb passed away at the age of 62 "following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," his rep told Us. He is survived by his brother, Barry, in addition to his wife and four children.
"It's sad, but the one great thing about the industry is that they remember the artists who came before them. There's a real traditional element here in that everyone who is on their way up was a fan of someone prior to them," DeGraw, 35, told Us at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas Sunday. "Artists, like the ones we've lost this year, are going to have fans within the generations that are current now and who are going to want to pay tribute to them."
Singer Thicke, 35, added: "My family has been friends with the Gibbs for many years, so it's obviously a tragedy. I'm here promoting the show Duets and just the other day I performed 'Staying Alive' -- I'm a huge Bee Gees fan and my heart and soul goes out to the family. Obviously, we wish them the best and their legacy lives on through the music."
Stars like Justin Bieber, 18, Carrie Underwood, 29, and Jordin Sparks, 22, shared their sentiments with MTV.
"I definitely listened to the Bee Gees," Bieber said. "I'm not too familiar with them, but it's definitely sad what happened. My heart goes out to him and his family."
Said Underwood: "My parents listened to the Bee Gees quite a bit when I was little, so I was definitely exposed to them at an early age. They just had a sound that was all their own, obviously, [it was] never duplicated. They were very influential on music in general, and it's very sad to hear about any loss.""There have been a lot of legends lost this year, so it's always sad to see it happen," Underwood added; the music industry has also lost Donna Summer, Whitney Houston and The Monkee's Davy Jones in 2012, among others.
Sparks was shocked to hear of Gibb's passing. "I thought he was doing better. Barry Gibb, when I was on American Idol, he was one of our mentors, and it was so amazing to meet him. I actually discovered my love for Bee Gees music through that week, and 'Too Much Heaven' and 'Emotions' are two of my favorite songs, and 'Stayin' Alive,' of course. Classic," she told MTV. "But it's so sad. I just can't [believe it]."
Other celebrities, like cyclist Lance Armstrong, 40, reality star Kris Jenner, 56, and Bones actor David Boreanaz, 43, expressed their condolences via Twitter.
"RIP Robin Gibb," cancer survivor Armstrong wrote. "Continues to sadden me to see cancer take our loved ones. Gotta put a stop to it."
Said Jenner: "Rest in peace, Robin Gibb. You brought us so much joy. What an amazing talent!"
Boreanaz wrote: "RIP Robin Gibb. The Bee Gees [are] one of the most successful groups in pop music history. Pure genius."
