Roseanne Barr Running for United States President: "I'm Not a Whore"

USMagazine, Thursday, August 9, 2012, 3:30pm (PDT)

Roseanne Barr is throwing her hat into the ring.

On August 8, the 59-year-old sitcom star announced plans to run for President of the United States in the November 6 election. "Vote for me. I'm not a liar. I'm not a thief. I'm not a whore," she told The Daily Beast. "And I'm not a politician. I think that uniquely qualifies me to become president of the U.S."

Barr is the presidential nominee for the Peace and Freedom Party; her running mate, Cindy Sheehan, is an antiwar activist whose son died while serving in Iraq. Sheehan memorably protested in front of former President George W. Bush's Texas ranch in 2005. "Our party is about peace and freedom -- Americans have been been bullsh-tted into forgetting that war does not mean freedom," Barr said. "When I'm president, I'm gonna outlaw bullsh-t."

"There is no real third party in America," she added. "There's this one party that has two sides to it -- the Democratic and Republican side. It's one party that has two heads. We want to give voters a choice for people not owned by Wall Street."

The thrice-divorced mother-of-five believes American citizens have been "bamboozled and hoodwinked" by the government, which she said is "owned by bankers."

Barr wants to cut back on military spending, bring the troops home, crack down on the outsourcing of jobs, legalize marijuana and remove tax caps for the rich.

The Roseanne star believes her experiences as a comedienne will work in her favor during election season. "In order to be able to write a good joke, you have to find the truth," she told The Daily Beast. "I've spent 30 years as a comedian focused on working-class issues. Working-class people do not have a vote in this country. That's the real reason why I'm running and why I've put up my own money to seek ballot access in all 50 states. I will keep running till I win."

Barr previously campaigned for the Green Party nomination. She lost to Jill Stein, a Harvard-trained physician.
