That's the lesson Teen Mom's Maci Bookout learns on Tuesday's season premiere when she finds out her ex, Ryan Edwards, could go to jail if he continues to skip out on their son Bentley's child support payments.
As the above preview clip shows, when the 19-year-old single mom calls the child support agency to inquire about a missed deposit, she gets a rude awakening when it comes to unemployed Edwards.
"When someone has been receiving unemployment, that doesn't mean they can stop paying child support," the agent tells Bookout. "If payments aren't coming in, we can file a contempt with the court, which typically means community service and, in most cases, six months in jail or a large lump sum payment."
Later, a shocked Bookout calls a pal to report her findings. "Can you get me a new baby-daddy?" she asks. "After 45 days [without payment], he has to go to jail. I just don't understand how he thinks child support is a joke. What about when Bentley's, like, eight, and he [asks] if dad's ever been to jail. I'll have to [say] 'yes, because he didn't pay up.'"
Find out if Edwards forks over the funds when Teen Mom premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. (EST) on MTV.
