The Dark Knight Rises Tops Weekend Box Office

One week after the tragic Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre that left 12 people dead after a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises July 21, moviegoers remained hesitant to head to the cineplex.

Grossing $135 million in overall ticket sales this weekend -- down an estimated 25 percent from this time last year -- the box office was indeed sluggish, but the third installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy still reigned supreme.

Earning $64.1 million this weekend, the flick starring Christian Bale ranks as one of 2012's highest-grossing movies. Though ticket sales fell approximately 60 percent compared to its opening weekend, The Dark Knight Rises has earned $289.1 million to date nationwide.

Ice Age: Continental Drift placed second this weekend at the box office, with the animated kiddie flick featuring the voices of Ray Romano and John Leguizamo taking in $13.3 million, according to Hollywood.com.

Rounding out the top five flicks this weekend were Fox's ensemble comedy The Watch ($13 million), Adam Shankman's dance movie Step Up Revolution ($11.8 million -- the lowest opening in its four-movie franchise) and the Mark Wahlberg-Mila Kunis comedy Ted ($7.3 million).
