Whoa! See Matthew McConaughey's Scary, Three-Month Slimdown

USMagazine, Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 1:00pm (PDT)

At least nobody can accuse him of not showing enough commitment to his craft.

Matthew McConaughey has been working hard to slim down to play AIDS activist Ron Woodruff in the upcoming Dallas Buyer's Club -- and his shocking, gaunt new look has some fans wondering if he's taken his efforts a little too far.

On Sunday, the 42-year-old star, who has reportedly lost 30 pounds so far for the role, recently caused a stir when he stepped out in Austin, Texas looking emaciated alongside his mom, Mary.

McConaughey's movie makeover has been both dramatic and rapid: In July, the Magic Mike actor posed on the red carpet alongside his new wife Camila Alves, looking his usual fit self. One month later, the star's newly-bony torso was on display during a mid-August trip to Ibiza, Spain, and since then, McConaughey has continued his intense quest to shed weight.

On August 15, the Lincoln Lawyer actor opened up to Us Weekly at an NYC event about his approach to the ultra-dramatic role.

"I'm playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn't. For me, it's more of a mental thing than a physical thing," he explained, adding that he's been eating "small amounts" of high-protein, low-carbohydrate food. "I'll get down to the weight I need to get to. I'm on my way, and it's what I need to do for the job."

The Dallas Buyers Club, due out in 2013, tells the real life story of Ron Woodruff, a drug addict in 1980s Dallas, Texas who contracts HIV. Woodruff began smuggling potentially life-saving drugs across the Mexican border, and is credited with launching one of the first AIDS support groups.
