James Franco's performance art side project may have been what got him the role as an Oscar co-host this year.
The '127 Hours' actor is hosting the 83rd Academy Awards alongside Anne Hathaway and told JustJared.com that he was considered for the job after a performance of him went viral. "One of the producers at the Oscars saw a YouTube clip of me singing with this artist named Kalup Linzy," he told the website. "And the producer was like, 'Maybe James would be willing to have a couple of singing lessons.' But whatever, I think I sounded pretty good with Kalup!"
Franco is part of an experimental music project called Kalup and Franco, and the duo is planning to record an album and make music videos as early as this year. The actor will also be "singing and dancing" at the Oscars, airing Feb. 27 on ABC.
The actor-turned-performance artist was also spotted as a blonde bombshell this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. Franco is in Park City, Utah promoting his new documentary 'Three's Company: The Drama,' based on the '70s sitcom, and donned a Suzanne Somers-inspired blonde wig while hosting a party.
