We think it was just foreshadowing of the eccentric characters he would eventually bring to life like Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp, who dropped out to join a garage band called The Kids, ironically got his acting break by going back to high school in 1987 on 21 Jump Street. Depp, who received 10,000 fan letters a month, hated heartthrob status and got out of his contract early. (He did revive officer Tom Hanson in the big-screen adaptation in 2012.) He slowly but surely changed his image by concentrating on smaller, wackier and darker films (Benny & Joon and Dead Man), working with top-notch directors like Tim Burton (who has cast him in eight projects so far), Roman Polanski and Lasse Halstrom, befriending Hunter S. Thompson, dabbling in drink and drugs, becoming co-owner of the Viper Room, getting arrested for trashing a hotel room, releasing a CD with his band P and eventually getting nominated for three Best Actor Oscars. He’s a regular Don Juan DeMarco with the ladies. He’s been married once, engaged at least three times (Winona Ryder, Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Grey) and had a tumultuous four-year relationship with model Kate Moss. In 1998, the two-time Sexiest Man Alive settled down in France with model-singer Vanessa Paradis. Their union produced two kids, Lily-Rose and Jack, and lasted 14 years.
