Lance Armstrong showed athletic promise at a very young age. He took up running and swimming around 10, cycling and triathlons at 13 and went professional at 16. He started training as a cyclist with the U.S. Olympic development team as a high school senior. He placed 11th in the World Championship Road Race, with the best time of any American since 1976, but finished 14th in the ’92 Barcelona Olympics road race. (He scored 12th in Atlanta in 1996.) He went professional after Barcelona. In 1996, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and given a 40 percent chance of survival as tumors had spread to his abdomen, lungs, lymph nodes and brain. He was dropped by his team, but vowed to race again and inspired millions with his LiveStrong charity. After being declared cancer-free in 1997, he won seven consecutive Tour de France titles from 1999 to 2005. He came back from retirement in 2008 and placed third in the Tour. But in 2012, the U.S Anti-Doping Agency stripped Armstrong of his seven titles for using performance-enhancing substances. The cyclist vehemently denied the claims, but eventually admitted doping during a 2013 Oprah interview. He married publicist Kristin Richard in 1998 and with her had son Luke in 1999 and twins Isabelle and Grace in 2001. After they divorced in 2003, he dated Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch, Kate Hudson and Ashley Olsen. He had another son, Maxwell, in 2009 with girlfriend Anna Hansen.
