Year in Review: Hairdos & Don’ts 2009

My what a year it has been in the world of celebrity hair. We've survived hair bows, split ends and bad dye jobs, and we've been inspired (and rendered quite jealous) by expert blow-outs and precisely placed tendrils. So which celebs had the most memorable hairdos and dont's for 2009?
Lady GaGa's got a big ol' hair bow made of hair, and we DON'T want to know how long the stylist worked on that thing.

Taylor Momsen eschews the usual, pre-party trip to the hair salon and instead opts to stick her finger in an electric socket. Zzzzzzap! The perfect glam rock DO.

Uh-oh. Did Milla Jovovich just take a bite out of a poisonous apple? Her Snow White-esque coif serves as a reminder to pretty girls everywhere: DON'T talk to strange hair stylists.

Bai Ling's ability to rock this DO is a real feather in her cap, no?

Dita Von Teese modeled a well-sculpted DON'T at a party for Dolce & Gabbana. Note to Dita: Only Cate Blanchett is allowed to mince about looking like Queen Elizabeth I.

Ali Larter deserves a whip-cream crown for this sexy hair DO, don'tcha think?

Kate Gosselin of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" loves talking about her hair. That's fine. But we're still pretty certain her asymmetrical shield bangs/frosted-tip front mullet are a solid DON'T, eight times over.

Strangely enough, on "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert, the same style is a DO. Maybe Kate should work in a blue streak?

In the summer, DO considering shaving one side of your head to promote proper ventilation, a la Cassie at P. Diddy's White Party.

Gwen Stefani gets the most bang for her bun -- but will the look catch on? We sure DO hope so.

When at Cannes, DON'T use your updo to smuggle out hors d'oeuvres, a la Eva Green.

If you look closely, the phrase "SEXILY BLONDE" is spelled out in Reese Witherspoon's luscious, Farrah Fawcett-esque locks. Subliminal hair messages are a MUST DO!

Juliette Lewis' bird-brained headdress appears to be a misguided tribute to Native Americans. DON'T try this at home, unless you're in third grade and it's for the Thanksgiving play in school.

We'll always think of Katherine Heigl as a blonde, but this shorter, light brown DO is a nice change. Now if only we could find a way to make Izzie on "Grey's Anatomy" a little less vanilla.

Edgy style? That's great, as long as you DON'T end up looking like a model for wall art at the Hair Cuttery (or a Thompson Twin, for that matter) like poor Kimberly Wyatt of the Pussycat Dolls.

We realize breakups can be hard, Ashanti, but don't take it out on your hair. Leaving the house looking like Cassie and Cheetara's illegitimate love child is a DON'T if we ever saw one.

DON'T you dare call Kelly Osbourne "Sally Jessy Raphael" one more time or she'll shoot you in the face.

Kristin Cavallari's tousled California girl hair is DO, even if her shredded, Las Vegas cocktail waitress dress is a DON'T.

We DON'T mind Katie Holmes' casually messy hair while she's out running errands with Suri, but we're not sure it's appropriate for a red carpet. And we bet Tom agrees. Tsk, tsk.

"Accidentally on Purpose" star Jenna Elfman's voluminous hair expertly accessorized with large gold hoop earrings is a DO. Well played, mama.

Vanessa Hudgens knows that an innocent soft up-DO paired with a coy smile will distract from any silly pictures floating around the Internet... right?

Dear Mischa Barton, your dirty hipster schtick was fun for a while, but now we're getting seriously worried about your personal grooming habits. DON'T give up on shampoo entirely, and we won't give up on you.

Padma Lakshmi looks cute and casual with this natural down DO, but adds just the slightest elegant detail with that little curled tendril off her shoulder.

Not much about "90210" screams old Hollywood except for, like, proximity and Jennie Garth's expertly curled bob DO at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

We DON'T dream of Jeannie when Iwe look at Ivana Trump's coif. And we doubt the Donald's former wife is trying to look like Senior Living Barbie either, but that's pretty much what she ended up with here.

Rihanna's edgy, short style must make getting through airport security a breeze. Extra points for the protective hand raised to the coif. Listen, people: You don't have to like it, but you DO have to respect it.

We're happy to report that Shakira's she-wolf DO is more sultry lioness mane than wild dog mange.

DON'T forget to wash your hair. We're all about the unkempt up 'do, but Jennifer Esposito's piecey highlights accentuate her hair's greasiness. Yuck.

DO:
This foursome of supermodel (Alessandra Ambrosio, Marissa Miller and co-Angels) DOs is the embodiment of female hair-envy. The length, the waves, the shine, oh my!
