In 1968, Arnold fulfilled a dream he had held since boyhood by moving to the West Coast. Like everybody else on the plane, he was after riches and stardom. He started tossing around iron at Gold's Gym on Venice Beach with the goal of taking the top honor in competitive bodybuilding, Mr. Olympia. He came in third in 1969, but the Austrian Oak, as he was known, won the title in 1970 and would dominate the sport throughout the '70s winning Mr. Olympia six more times. Arnold barely spoke English when he arrived, so he wisely dated an English teacher. She later wrote a tell-all book relating tales of his narcissism and infidelity.
