In 2000, Ashton kicked off his film career with "Dude, Where's My Car?", the "Citizen Kane" of stoner comedies, and a few years later he would have a go at drama in "The Butterfly Effect." The critics lambasted the convoluted sci-fi time-travel movie -- Rex Reed wrote, "Not a second of this bilge makes a lick of sense." -- but it did big box office. Though he was still on a streak in the early aughts, there was one dark episode: In 2001, Ashley Ellerin, an aspiring model whom Ashton was dating, was murdered by alleged serial killer Michael Gargiulo. Ashton went to her Hollywood bungalow but, unable to enter, he looked through the window and saw what looked like wine on the floor. He would find out later that he had seen a pool of Ashley's blood on the floor.
