In a recent interview with Parade.com, Charlize Theron comes off as one complex chick. After declaring that she's just, you know, not talented enough for those romantic comedies, we couldn't help but wonder what a fellow named Oscar would have to say to that. She goes on to explain that those darker, twistier roles just come easier to her. Well, to each her own. Check out some highlights from the interview below, and then see the rest of the exclusive coverage on Parade.com.
Don't worry, Heigl, your territory is safe for now:
"I don't necessarily think of them as dark roles. I like conflicted women because I feel like we get so little of that. I think every director that works with me always kind of comments on the fact that it is quite ironic that I haven't done comedy because there is zero drama about me. But, I think taste really applies to comedy, maybe even more than drama. I think a sense of humor is a very personal thing and I don't know if I am talented enough to do romantic comedies. But I love what the Coen Brothers do and Gus Van Sant does with comedy. I would love to do something like that. Spread the word."
If Guillermo Arriaga asked her to jump off a cliff, she might just jump off a cliff:
"I really believe that the success of trying to make a good film is really about chemistry -- and not just with the other actors, but the director as well. I felt like Guillermo Arriaga and I had the right chemistry that we would take each other's hand and kind of jump off the cliff and really set out to try and make the same movie."
They may have been good to her, but she's ready to let go of those "Reindeer Games" years:
"I was ready to pay my dues and by no means did I think that I was going to just walk in and do challenging work. In the beginning there was a part of me that knew that there was going to be a few frustrating years. But you get yourself out there and you work hard and hope that one day somebody will actually step to the plate and say, 'I believe that you can do this.' So I kind of had to hold out a little bit after people kind of accepted me in that role of the femme fatale in 'Two Days in the Valley' because I got offered a lot of roles just like it."
Shampoo? Not in true blue thespian's toolkit:
"I really fought for roles like 'Devil's Advocate' and 'The Yards' and 'Cider House Rules.' I flew myself out to screen test and stalked and almost went to prison. And, you know, I didn't wash my hair to kind of break this idea of what people kind of thought of me. I was very lucky because I finally got to work on really good material."
