In early 2008, the relatively unknown actors were cast in the roles that would make them stars. "She felt connected to him from the first moment," "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke told Newsweek, comparing Kristen's first encounter with Rob to "electricity or love at first sight." To win his role as vampire heartthrob Edward, Rob had to first win Kristen's approval. Hardwicke auditioned the potential stars in her Malibu, Calif., home. The duo met for the first time in the kitchen, and then the audition moved to the bedroom, where Rob and Kristen kissed for the first time on Hardwicke's bed. "Kristen was like, 'It's got to be Rob!'" Hardwicke later recalled. The director, who could sense the chemistry immediately, said, "I felt the sparks. I could see the attraction."
