How has your role as a mentor with these kids affected your parenting skills?

It's a constant reminder of how good we have it, how good I had it when I was a kid and how good my kids have it with a mom and dad at home. A lot of these kids come from single-parent families, so it gives me a constant appreciation for how good my family has it. But even if there is not a problem -- some of these kids come from good homes -- it's a good reminder socially. What are kids getting out of school? The first school is always the home with your parents but the kids leave the house and go to school and someone is parenting your kids for 8, 9, 10 hours a day. We are providing a service, a curriculum after school that is very base level. It's a safe place to go. But they are coming out of it with values for healthy body and mind. And I want my kids to get that [from me], but I also want them to get that from a school experience.
