Michelle Williams on Heath: 'There's a Hole in Our Life'

Michelle Williams's transformation from a teen star into a serious, grown-up actress happened in just a few years, but perhaps nothing underscored her adulthood more than the 2008 death of Heath Ledger, her fiancé and the father of her now-four-year-old daughter, Matilda. In the newest Marie Claire, Williams spoke about the loss of Ledger, her life as a single mother and how challenging roles in "Shutter Island" and "Blue Valentine" helped her grow as a person.

On Heath Ledger's death:

"Very obviously, for me and for her [Matilda], there's a hole in our life…. Of course the natural inclination is to want to fill it and make it disappear, but what I've come to recently is that it's impossible. Nothing will fit in that hole because what we want back we can't get, which is this one person. I'm not going to rush anything and scamper around like a mad person and make myself crazy."
