Kirsten's father was born in Hamburg, Germany, where the actress has often visited her extended family. She obtained dual citizenship in 2011, even though she only speaks the language "at a child's level." Kirsten told German newspaper B.Z. shortly after becoming a German citizen, "I'm now a real international lady -- one who can film in Europe without a problem." She added that she would love to eventually make a German film despite the language barrier, saying the opportunity would be "the greatest joy." Kirsten has also said she'd love to buy an apartment in Berlin. "It's such a young city, and right now so much is happening in Berlin," she said.
