Kate Gosselin faces backlash over allegedly racist gesture on Twitter
Has Kate Gosselin been spending too much time with Paula Deen? According to the Daily Mail, a Twitter user calling him or herself "Katie Deen" -- what a coinky-dink -- recently posted this photo of Gosselin wearing an Asian-inspired headpiece while pulling her eyes askew, as if to mock Asian features. The caption? "@Kateplusmy8 Makes fun of Asians with 8 half Korean children."
E! News notes that Gosselin responded to the flurry of online ire on Tuesday, writing that at the time the photo was taken, "a common topic of our show was 'everybody's Asian except for Mommy.'" She said that a fan had sent over a costume of Asian garb (albeit stereotypical) so Kate could feel like she fit in.
"Jon and I were opening fan mail together one afternoon — which often filled the garage of our Elizabethtown home — and when we opened this plastic Asian dress-up wig sent from a caring fan, we smiled, each taking turns posing in it and snapping photos (on my phone) of each other. Naturally, I 'slanted' my eyes to show him my best Asian impression, which made him smile," she wrote. "I married an Asian. I have eight biracial children, therefore I'm quite certain that I'm the last person that could be called a racist."
Gosselin did not comment on who may have leaked the image, which she said was stored on her home computer.
