Old Friends Recall Tom Cruise's Catholic Seminary Past
Long before he got into Dianetics auditing and E-meters, Tom Cruise was on the path to priesthood, childhood friends of the actor tell the Daily News. Shortly after his parents split (his father was reportedly abusive), Cruise, who was born Tom Mapother, enrolled in the St. Francis Seminary in Louisville, Ky. "I think he wanted a good education," said Father Ric Schneider. "With his parents going through a divorce, it was tough on him, that's maybe one of the reasons why he came here."
Friends from that time remember Cruise as skilled at sports and acting, and earnest about the Catholic faith. John Kowalski, a peer on the school soccer team also suspected that Cruise was interested in becoming a priest as a way of overcoming trouble at home. "He never elaborated, but I think he was there to run away from his dad," Kowalski told the News. "He had a good personality, but he was closed about his family, even back then." Cruise's seminary tenure ended abruptly after he was either kicked out for stealing booze or his family moved to New Jersey, depending on whose story you believe.
