Get the hanky ready because this one's a doozy. After nearly two decades together and a period of failing health, Sarah Silverman's best friend has moved on to the great doghouse in the sky. "Duck left me today but I forgive him," she tweeted around midnight on Wednesday. Later, she added "an obituary of sorts, detailing how she'd rescued him from a shelter in Van Nuys, Calif., 14 years ago, and describing him as "a happy dog, though serene. And stoic. And he loved love."
Duck fought through arthritis, blindness and deafness in his sunset years, but it was when he stopped eating and drinking that Sarah realized things were serious. "I couldn't figure out this hunger strike. Duck had never been political before. And then, over the weekend, I knew. It was time to let him go," she wrote.
She wrote that she and her boyfriend, Kyle Dunnigan, "laid in bed and massaged his tiny body, as we love to do -- hearing his little 'I'm in heaven' breaths," until her vet was able to attend to seeing Duck off peacefully and as comfortably as possible with "sleeping meds."
She added that she "held him and kissed him and whispered to him" until after he had passed. "I held him so tight. And then finally, when his body lost its heat, and I could sense the doctor thinking about the imminent rush hour traffic, I handed him over," she wrote. She concluded with a few lines of near-verse:
My longest relationship.
My only experience of maternal love.
My constant companion.
My best friend.
As soon as we manage to compose ourselves, we'll be sending Sarah, Kyle, and Duck, wherever he is, lots of love … Sigh.
