Mariah Carey on "Here's Barbara"

By Melissa Hunter
Mariah Carey sat down with Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie on the Sirius radio show "Here's Barbara." And as would be expected, Barbara asks the tough questions -- like how she met Nick Cannon, her dogs' mating patterns, and her dislike of birthdays.
Between a new album (her 7549th, I'm pretty sure), a new movie (alas, it's not "Glitter 2"), and her new fragrance (smells like fairy dust, Slim Fast, and hundred dollar bills, I've heard), she's got a lot to talk about.

On how she makes music when she can't read music (no big deal, just like how Shakespeare was illiterate):
"I do wish that I read music. When I was little -- I was six years old -- I was taking piano lessons and it was with a friend of my mom's and I kept playing by ear... I've written 'Vision of Love' and 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' and certain songs that I start to write on the piano. But because I don't consider myself a great pianist by any means, I prefer to work with someone who I can collaborate with and I can sing the chords to them."
![On why she included Barbara in one of her new song lyrics (aside from the fact that she's gangsta):Towards the end, I say, 'This is for real, for real'... You [Barbara] are definitely real. And when we go on your shows, it's for real. That's what it's trying to say.](http://static.wonderwall.com/Photos/Original/9855_Original.jpg)

On how Nick Cannon willed Mariah to enter his world (I think someone's been reading The Secret...):
"He likes to say that he spoke it into existence. He told everybody who he thought might know me, 'Tell your girl Mariah that I want to talk to her.' All this stuff. I didn't know him... but I didn't know what to believe... At the 2005 Teen Choice Awards, I had gotten an award for 'We Belong Together.' He told me that he said to the people that were doing the show, that he wouldn’t do it, unless he could present my award to me… I said ‘thank you for all the nice things that you've been saying about me.’ And he said 'I meant everything. Give me a chance.' And then I didn't see him again for two years."

How she started dating Nick by casting him in her music video (more foolproof than Match.com):
"I always remembered the moment. We were doing a video and there was going to be a love interest in it. And we were thinking of all different actors and people. We wanted it to look authentic. And I said, 'Oh, what about Nick Cannon?'"

Barbara and Mariah dishing about their dogs (have to include the entire interaction between the two. It's really priceless):
BARBARA: You have a dog named Cha Cha?
MARIAH: Yes, I do.
BARBARA: I have a dog named Cha Cha. My dog is a Havanese, which is a terrier that was originally raised by Cuban aristocracy, so my dog’s real name is Cha Cha Cha. But those who know her well call her Cha Cha.
MARIAH: Mine is named Chachita. She's very little.
BARBARA: She had a little accident in your dressing room, I hear.
MARIAH: She is in heat. And my other dog, JJ, is…
BARBARA: On her.
MARIAH: Yeah. But I want them to have puppies. Because they’re going to be very cute.

On if baring children is on her To Do list:
"I would like to do that. My thing about right now is that I have to put this album out and the movie, Precious ... There is a little bit of a better time than when you’re promoting a move, album, and a fragrance."
