As a "sad, mad and confused" Jessica Simpson leans on friends and family following her birthday dumping by Tony Romo, Nick Lachey is attempting to nip reunion rumblings in the bud in the most gentlemanly way possible.
"I think it's fun storytelling, but there's very little truth to any of it," he tells People magazine. "I certainly have heard about her breakup and I wish her the best, as I've always done. Aside from that, there really is nothing to say."
Well, there may be a little something more to say.

"I haven't talked to her in probably two years," adds Nick. "I wish her happiness. That's where it pretty much ends."
Last month, Lachey split from Vanessa Minnillo after three years of togetherness, and he seems philosophically at ease with his solo status.
"I'm in a good place," he explains. "I've learned, through years of not only being in this business, but being in relationships, that you have to take it as it goes. With every experience, you learn something about your life, and you try to take that and move on and be a better person because of it."

As for Jessica, if she's learned anything from experience, it might be that birthdays tend to suck. Turns out the walking papers she received from Romo could rank right up there with a present purportedly bestowed on her by onetime beau John Mayer, with whom she may or may not have had recent text communications.
"Several years ago when he was dating Jessica Simpson, he couldn't go to her birthday party because he was on tour," a source recalls to the New York Post. "So the night of her birthday she had dinner with [mane man] Ken Paves and a few friends. Everyone thought John would forget her birthday, but then a gift arrived from him -- it was a DVD of him in concert."
Now, we know what you're thinking: Worst ... gift ... ever, whether you're dating Mayer or not. But if Jess was expecting something a little more thoughtful, or expensive, or generally less self-serving and sucky, she apparently didn't let on.

"Jessica spent the rest of the night watching the DVD on a loop, 'being with him,'" sighs the snitch. "It was so sad."
But Simpson looked anything but glum on Saturday night, when she stepped out in Los Angeles with a trio of girlfriends.
"Love my ladies!!!" Simpson Tweeted as she smiled wide for a photo with gal pals CaCee Cobb, Adrienne Sands and stylist Nicole Chavez. "Wish I could be with them everyday of my life. Laughter is wonderful :)."
Romo, for his part, has been keeping busy since the bust-up by partying with pals and hitting the golf course. This weekend, he came in second at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe, a decent enough showing he achieved by clearing his mind of everything but the little white ball.

"The more stuff you've got in your mind, probably the less successful you're going to be," he explained to People. "So the only thing I think about is the task at hand. When you let your mind wander or think about other things, you're setting yourself up for failure. So I just try to stay focused. I've done a pretty good job of that this week."
But a pal of the Dallas Cowboys quarterback disagrees, saying the NFL-er is "emotionally drained" from the birthday-ditching fallout.
A few female fans tried to help Tony through this tough time by holding up supportive signs during the golf tourney, with one overzealous type even yelling, "We don't like that Barbie either!" Romo, to his credit, didn't react.
