The idea that an Adam Sandler comedy could inspire a grand romantic gesture seems about as likely as Lindsay Lohan buckling down and working hard to become a productive member of society. But it turns out Justin Bieber was so moved by a scene in the funnyman's 2002 flick "Mr. Deeds," that he replicated it for girlfriend Selena Gomez.
TMZ says that after pocket-size pair took in a performance Friday night by Selena's pal Demi Lovato at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Justin, 17, told his 19-year-old squeeze, "Follow me."
The Biebs then led Selena through an underground tunnel to the nearby Staples Center, which was deserted except for a candle-lit dinner for two that had been set up on the arena's floor. In "Mr. Deeds," Sandler surprises Winona Ryder with a similar arrangement at Madison Square Garden.
After the twosome chowed down on steak and pasta (gotta love teenage metabolisms), phase two of Justin's wooing plan kicked in, namely, watching Leonardo DiCaprio slowly slip under icy water and drown.
For the next three-plus hours, Bieber and Gomez screened "Titanic" surrounded by 20,000 empty seats.
For those wondering how much this cost Justin (and worried that he should be setting some cash aside for his non teen-idol future), TMZ says the grand total was zero. Turns out the Staples Center wasn't booked that night, so execs let him have it for free because he's sold out the place three times.
The starlet, who earlier in the day enjoyed a walk on the beach with her beau, was apparently "shocked" by his smooth moves.
"Romance isn't dead," Bieber tweeted on Friday night. "Treat your lady right fellas."
