Who would have guessed that a relationship with a 26-year age difference might have experienced a few hiccups along the way? Oh, right, everyone. Nonetheless, Celine Dion reveals that her 18-year union to Svengali-like manager Réne Angélil has had its share of difficulties.
"Réne and I had our tough times. It wasn't always easy," she tells Robin Leach in Vegas Deluxe. "We had tension between us. It's never easy being husband and wife, but add to that we are in business together, dealing with all the added pressures of shows, concerts, tours, traveling. It was hard -- a lot of hard work.
The pair met when the Canadian chanteuse was 12 and her mother sent Angélil a demo tape; they began dating 7 years later (for the math deficient, Dion was 19 to Angélil's 45).
But up until seven years ago, they "weren't communicating properly," she says. "I was old school and kept it hidden. Forget about it, and it will go away."
Fortunately, the 45-year-old mom of three had a breakthrough after a girlfriend advised her on the best way to make emotional contact and "say things the right way … on an equal and respectful level."
"It changed the way we related to each other," Celine acknowledges. "We laugh. We joke. We kid each other. We want our marriage to last forever. Talk over everything and you'll find you are still on the honeymoon … communication -- it's the most important. It's the secret."
