When she was 9, Frances was forced to live with her grandmother and aunt. But at 17, Frances chose to do so. In December 2009, Frances asked that her guardianship be removed from her mother and transferred to Kurt's mother and sister. "My life has been so inconsistent. [My grandmother is] the most constant thing I've ever had," she told Harper's Bazaar in 2008. "She's probably the person I respect most out of anybody in the world."
That same month, Frances and Courtney got into a physical fight, prompting Frances to get a restraining order against her mother for herself, her grandmother, her aunt and her dog, Uncle Fester. "[She] has taken drugs for as long as I can remember," Frances said, according to court papers. "She basically exists now on ... Xanax, Adderall, Sonata and Abilify, sugar and cigarettes. She rarely eats ... She often falls asleep in her bed while she is smoking, and I am constantly worried that she will start a fire (which she has done at least three times) that will threaten our lives."
