Kanye West's new Red October sneakers sell out in 11 minutes; head to eBay for millions
The Kanye West-designed Air Yeezy II Red Octobers are the gift that keeps on giving. First, months of manufacturing delays on the kicks provided us with noteworthy Yeezus quotes about his relationship with Nike: "[Nike CEO] Mark Parker tried to son me. Yes. Son me because I am the sun and I will shine bright," he said during an onstage rant at Madison Square Garden in New York last fall. "And when I don't have as much money as a billionaire and when I don't have the factories that, that dude has over there, what I do have is my voice. Ain't no corporation that can take me away from my voice and I'm going to scream at the top of my motherf------ mountain as loud as I want."
To Yeezy's credit, that mountain appears to be made of cash. The $245 sneakers went on sale without warning online on Sunday -- and sold out 11 minutes later. Underscoring the demand for the shoe, eBay became the next hotspot marketplace for the Red Octobers, where one auction on the site was up to $16.4 million as of Monday morning, according to Pitchfork.
All of which may be a lesson to Nike: After Kanye's appearance on Hot 97 in November, Fader reported that he had announced he was dropping his deal with the Swoosh brand and heading for a partnership with Adidas. "... The old me, without a daughter, would have taken the Nike deal because I just love Nikes so much," he said. "But the new me, with a daughter, takes the adidas deal because I have royalties and I have to provide for my family."
