Pharrell's hat is a Vivienne Westwood-designed piece of hip-hop history
Lumpy, large and even more distracting than a pair of robots, Pharrell Williams' hat took over the Internet during Sunday's Grammy Awards telecast by inspiring its own Twitter and Instagram accounts and giving Smokey Bear more attention that he's had in decades. Like it or not, though, what appeared to be a fashion mishap was, in fact, a historical reference to the early days of hip-hop.
"It's a Vivienne Westwood Buffalo hat from when she was with Malcolm McLaren," Williams told the Hollywood Reporter after the awards ceremony. "It's not vintage -- I would've been really stylin' if I had once from the '80s." The hat was made popular following its appearance in McLaren's "Buffalo Gals" video. Take that, haters!
