Sean Penn on Hugo Chavez's Death: 'Poor People Around the World Lost a Champion'
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez succumbed to cancer on Tuesday at the age of 58, and his longtime Hollywood friend, Sean Penn, is grieving his loss. "Today the people of the United States lost a friend it never knew it had. And poor people around the world lost a champion," said Penn, who supported the controversial leader despite widespread criticism. "I lost a friend I was blessed to have," he continued in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "My thoughts are with the family of President Chavez and the people of Venezuela. … Venezuela and its revolution will endure under the proven leadership of Vice President Maduro." Directors Oliver Stone and Michael Moore also spoke out about Chavez's death, remembering his work in statements on Twitter.
