Billy Joel on Elton John's tough love: 'He's kind of like a mom'
Voicing what appeared to be concern for Billy Joel's artistic drive and control of the alcoholism he's previously been treated for, Elton John made a number of negative remarks in the press about his former tour mate back in 2011. Among them, he suggested that Joel had stopped writing new pop songs out of fear or laziness.
"That's his opinion. I don't do it because I don't wanna. He tends to shoot off his mouth — he shoots from the hip. I think his heart is in the right place. Maybe he's trying to motivate me, to get me mad or something. He's kind of like a mom," Joel tells the New York Times in a new interview.
As for the Rocket Man's belief that Joel didn't take rehab seriously enough? "He doesn't know anything about my private life," says Joel. "I stayed at his house once in France. He's a very friendly, charming man, a nice fun guy, but we really never spent much time personally together. He doesn't really know that much about me, so I let a lot of that slide. I'd work with him again, sure."
Billy Joel is performing a handful of concerts in 2013; he's said that if the shows go well, he may launch a full-scale tour.
