British actress Emma Thompson has agreed to withdraw her name from a petition to free Roman Polanski after a fan called on her to stop supporting the incarcerated filmmaker. The Oscar-winning actress signed a petition to free Polanski, who has been imprisoned since September (09) on the request of Los Angeles law officials.
But on a trip to Exeter University in the U.K. earlier this month (Nov09), Thompson was accosted by a student who requested she retract her support.
And after a lengthy chat with Caitlin Hayward-Tapp, who has set up a petition for those opposed to Polanski's freedom, Thompson agreed.
The 19 year old says, "I asked if I could speak to her (in person). She is such an inspirational woman, I reckoned she must have been willing to reconsider.
"It turned out she was very willing to hear what I had to say. She said she knows Roman Polanski and that she had had calls from friends asking her to sign the petition. She knows what a terrible early life he (Polanski) had.
"She said she had already been thinking a lot about the petition, as others had expressed their dismay at her signing it. We talked for 15 minutes and by the end she said she would get her name removed. She said regardless of the fact she knows him and the terrible things he has been through, a crime is a crime. If she doesn't do this, it'd be a great shame."
Polanski is facing extradition to the U.S. to face sentencing over a 1977 charge of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. He pleaded guilty to the charges but fled the country in 1978 before he could be handed his punishment.
Despite calls from his victim to drop the case, Polanski has been refused bail on two separate occasions over worries he is a "flight risk".

Rihanna cannot understand why a Los Angeles judge ordered her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown to keep his distance from the R&B star after he pleaded guilty to attacking her, branding the restraining order "unnecessary".The Umbrella hitmaker was badly beaten up in February (09) when a heated argument between the couple escalated into violence.
Brown was sentenced to five years' probation in August (09) and ordered to stay away from Rihanna as a result of the incident.
But the Bajan beauty insists the court order only serves to complicate her work schedule, because she constantly has to take into consideration her ex's whereabouts.
In a candid interview with U.S. newswoman Diane Sawyer, she says, "I did not want that because it was unnecessary, really.
"And I didn't want it to be interrupting my work. Like if I went to an event, I'd have to think, 'Oh my gosh, I'd have to stay 10 yards away from him.' It's a spectacle, it's too much, it just didn't make sense to me."

Rihanna is not convinced her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown fully understands the hurt and pain he caused following their violent bust-up in February (09) after viewing his video apology online for the first time this week (ends06Nov09).Brown released a two-minute video on the internet in July (09) in which he expressed his "deepest regret" for raising his fists to Rihanna, beating her black and blue.
In the footage, Brown admits he is "very ashamed" of his "inexcusable" actions and wishes he could go back in time to correct his mistakes: "I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again but unfortunately I can't. I can't go into what happened but most important (sic) I'm not gonna sit here and make any excuses. I take great pride in being able to exercise self control but what I did was inexcusable. I am very sad and very ashamed at what I've done."
Rihanna was shown the video by U.S. newswoman Diane Sawyer during a candid TV interview earlier this week, and while she accepts his apology, she fears Brown will never know just how badly he hurt her.
The Umbrella singer says, "Sounds like he might have been reading off of a teleprompter... I know he felt really bad about doing it, I just don't know if he understood the extent of what he did.
"The thing that men don't realise, when they hit a woman, it's... the face, the broken arm, the black eye, it's going to heal. That's not the problem. It's the scar inside. You flashback. You remember it all the time. It comes back to you whether you like it or not. And it's painful. So I don't think he understood that. They never do. They don't know that. They can't know that."
Brown was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to stay away from Rihanna after pleading guilty to the attack. He was also ordered to undergo anger management counselling and complete community service.

Britney Spears fans stormed out of the pop superstar's show in Perth, Australia on Friday night (06Nov09), insisting the singer was terrible. The exodus began just three songs into her Aussie tour debut - after fans made it clear they were unhappy with the star's lacklustre performance and miming.
One fan, Josh Blee, tells the Sydney Daily Telegraph, "It was cr*p... She has let us down."
Other concertgoers complained they couldn't even see the singer miming on the big screens above the stage because she mostly performed with her back to the cameras. And she never addressed the fans who had paid for expensive tickets.
Friday night's outrage came just 24 hours after Virginia Judge, the New South Wales Minister for Fair Trading, urged ticket agencies to warn fans about touring stars who don't sing live.
Taking aim at Spears in particular, Judge said, "Live means live. If you are spending up to $200, I think you deserve better than a film clip.

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) -- Some women strode the catwalk in vicious spiked bracelets and body armor. Others had their heads covered, burqa-style, but with shoulders — and tattoos — exposed. Male models wore long, Islamic robes as well as shorts and sequined T-shirts. As surging militant violence grabs headlines around the world, Pakistan's top designers and models are taking part in the country's first-ever fashion week. While the mix of couture and ready-to-wear fashions would not have been out of place in Milan or New York, many designers made reference to the turmoil, reflecting the contradictions and tensions coursing through this society. The four-day event, which was postponed twice due to security fears and amid unease at hosting such a gathering during an army offensive in the northwest, is aimed at showing the world there is more to Pakistan than violence and at helping boost an industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people, organizers said. Many of the models, designers and well-heeled fashionistas packing out each night said the gathering was a symbolic blow to the Taliban and their vision of society, where women are largely confined to the house and must wear a sack-like covering known as a burqa. "This is our gesture of defiance to the Taliban," said Ayesha Tammy Haq, the CEO of Fashion Pakistan Week. "There is a terrible problem of militancy and political upheaval ... but that doesn't mean that the country shuts down. That doesn't mean that business comes to a halt." The shows are taking place in Karachi, the country's largest and most cosmopolitan city, in a five-star hotel just next door to the American consulate, which was bombed by Islamist militants in 2002. It's two hours by plane from the northwest, the heartland of al-Qaida and the Taliban, and has largely been spared the violence sweeping the country over the last month. "Unfortunately, it is the bad side of Pakistan that gets everybody's attention," said top Pakistani model Nadia Hussain as hairdressers and makeup artists fussed over her backstage. "It has never been this bad, I don't know what will happen," she said, as fellow models chain-smoked cigarettes. While many of the city's 12 million people live in slums, hip cafes and restaurants in wealthy neighborhoods draw sophisticated crowds of young men and women into the early hours, more often than not speaking English with each other and wearing Western dress. While the shows in Karachi resembled fashion weeks in other parts of the world, there were no foreign designers or buyers. The organizers decided not to invite them given the precarious security situation. "Who is going to come here with such negative stuff going on?" said Tabassum Mughal, a young designer who employs about 30 people. "Those who are here already are leaving." Textiles make up some 60 percent of Pakistan exports and are worth around $12 billion dollars a year. The country's cotton and silks are among the finest in the world. But the industry has failed to grow in recent years amid political unrest, violence and chronic power shortages. As if on cue, a power cut during the fashion week's opening evening left the hall in darkness for several minutes. The fashion industry represents a tiny fraction of the country's textile exports. "We are still doing the 30 dollar a dozen T-shirt business. There is no value added," said Haq. "We should be employing millions of people, not hundreds of thousands of them." Designers presented a mix of clothes, some drawing on traditional Pakistani outfits and tribal motifs, others that had little or no sign of traditional aesthetics. In a culture where nearly all women dress modestly, many outfits were too racy for local tastes. "This does not represent what we are as a people," designer Ayesha Tahir Masood said. "Only 0.001 percent of Pakistani women would wear these clothes, and then only in a controlled environment when drunk out of their minds."

Steven Tyler has quit Aerosmith, according to the band's guitarist Joe Perry. It comes just months after the singer spoke out publicly to dismiss reports the band was on the verge of splitting following a year of cancelled tour dates, injuries and accidents.
In August (09), Tyler broke his shoulder after falling off stage while performing in South Dakota, and the group was forced to scrap the remainder of its summer tour.
Perry admitted that following the accident he and Tyler didn't speak for more than a month, prompting rumours the band's future was in jeopardy.
And it seems fans' fears were justified - guitarist Perry has revealed his pal has left the rock group after its performance as part of the Formula One racing season's final weekend in Abu Dhabi last weekend (01Nov09).
He tells the Las Vegas Sun, "Steven quit as far as I can tell. I don't know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."
Perry claims the discord in the band is down to Tyler's lack of communication, including his failure to return phone calls: "He's notorious for that. That's one thing I've learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles.
"Frankly, the last few months I've been wanting not to rock the boat. I don't want him cancelling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn't want to call him out or anything and get him anymore p**sed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That's how I know about it... He has had no contact with me or the other band members."
But Perry is determined to continue with Aerosmith, even if Tyler refuses to return.
He adds, "Right now I'm adjusting to how we're going to go on. Aerosmith is such a powerful band, I mean it's like a steam locomotive. You just can't disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We're just trying to - at least I am - trying to figure out what direction the band should take.
"As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste. I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we'll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch."
