If tabloids are to be believed, Ed Westwick has quite a bit in common with the hard-partying lothario Chuck Bass, his alter-ego on Gossip Girl for six seasons. Many of the rumors stem from his days fronting a rock band called The Filthy Youth and past romantic links to the likes of Drew Barrymore and Gossip co-star Jessica Szohr. Of course, there have also been reports of his undying love of gardening and his philosophical shoulder tattoo. (He has 21G, which is short for 21 grams, the purported weight of the human soul.) Whatever the real story, we know Westwick’s mom, a psychologist, enrolled him in a drama program at 6 and he trained at London’s National Youth Theater as a teen before landing small roles in films like Children Of Men and Breaking And Entering. Thanks to Gossip, he was able to conquer American audiences and land on covers of many of its magazines (Details, Out, Entertainment Weekly, New York) as well as People’s 2008 Most Beautiful list. It also helped him secure more film and TV work. He has been seen in Californication, J. Edgar and the Donnie Darko sequel. Next, he will get to use his actual accent to play Tybalt in yet another retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet alongside Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti and Stellan Skarsgard. And to think, his mother-chucking calling card almost never came to fruition. His work visa paperwork came through only the day before the GG pilot began shooting.
