It was a big night for hip hop and R&B artists as the 2010 BET Awards recognized the best in the business.
Hosted by Queen Latifah, the night was kicked off by presenting a pregnant Alicia Keys with the award for Best Female R&B artist. Keys also performed twice in the evening and won the award for Best Collaboration for her work with Jay-Z on the song "Empire State of Mind."
Other familiar faces to perform at the awards included Diddy, Monica, T.I., Eminem and Travis Barker.
Breakout rapper Drake won for Best Male Hip Hop artist, while Nicki Minaj won for Best Female Hip Hop Artist.
In one of his first performances since pleading guilty to felony assault in related to a domestic violence incident involving his then-girlfriend Rihanna, Chris Brown broke down during a tribute to the late Michael Jackson when he sang "Man in the Mirror." As he stepped off stage, he was consoled by Michael's brother Jermaine Jackson and given a standing ovation.
Later in the evening, Brown won the Fandemonium Award, saying in his acceptance speech, "I let you guys down before, but I promise I won't do it again." Rihanna also won the Viewer's Choice Award for her song with Young Jeezy titled "Hard." Young Jeezy accepted the award on her behalf.
Other people recognized at the event were Prince with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and athletes Lebron James and Serena Williams who received the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards. Trey Songz and his posse took the stage later on in the evening as he accepted the award for Best Male R&B Artist.
Presented by "The Insider" correspondent Niecy Nash, the coveted Video of the Year went to pop stars Beyonce and Lady Gaga for "Video Phone." The show concluded with a blow out performance by rapper Ludacris, with Tommy Lee on drums.
