Bad Idea of the Day: Fiancé-Less Jennifer Love Hewitt Has Already Chosen Three Engagement Rings

In her 2010 book "The Day I Shot Cupid," Jennifer Love Hewitt confessed that ever since she was 12, she's made monthly pilgrimages to the same jewelry store to try on her "dream" engagement ring.

In a few weeks, J.Love will turn 32, which means she's made about 240 trips to stare at a bright and shiny object on her finger, making her time with that ring among the longest and deepest relationships she's had.

The reason we bring this up is that the starlet, who has been dating little-known actor Alex Beh for about seven months, has now expanded her sparkler wish list, telling Ellen DeGeneres that she's narrowed her picks down to a trio of Tiffany rocks.

"I feel like I'm doing the guy a favor," Hewitt explained on Tuesday's show. "I don't want to be upset if he picks a bad ring, so I feel like having three picked out and saying, 'Look! Look at this plethora of things you can choose from!'"

To which the guy will likely reply, "Look! Look at how insane this looks to the average person! Marriage is about so much more than the ring. Have you even contemplated the whole 'building a life together' part of this equation, you silly, silly woman?"

But to Jennifer, who was previously engaged to actor Ross McCall and counts such catches as Jamie Kennedy and John Mayer among her exes, she's merely being helpful by taking every ounce of control out of the guy's hands.

Oh, let's just have her explain: "If marriage comes up, I'm like, 'You know what's so weird? There is this store and there are three rings in it ... If you chose one of these three, I'm going to be really excited. And if you go off on your own, we could have a weird, awkward moment. So, why would you want to do that?'"

To which he'll likely reply: "You know what's weird? Here I wanted to spent the rest of my life with you, and you just reduced that to a 'weird, awkward' moment over a lousy piece of jewelry."

Levelheaded Ellen, who proposed to Portia de Rossi with a gorgeous 3-carat Neil Lane diamond ring, attempted to talk some sense into Hewitt, who, by the by, listed "how to pick a diamond" under a section in her book titled "What a Man Should Know."

"Wouldn't that be a lovely surprise if he picks out or designs something really special, that's gigantic?" DeGeneres jokingly suggested.

J.Love's response: "Yeah, I never thought of it that way. Maybe that should be my growth for the new year. To let the rings go."

A few other things we suggest she let go, all of which are directly from her book: involuntary cuddle-time ("Play it cool until he falls asleep, and then Velcro yourself to him, quickly and with very little motion"); forced connections ("When they say 'I,' help them say 'we.' If you and your guy are with other people and he says, 'I ate at the best restaurant last night,' just simply follow it up with, 'Yeah, we had the best food!' It will eventually change his thinking"); and giving advice (from her list of "20 Things to Do After a Breakup," which she might be experiencing after her terrified squeeze checks out her Ellen interview: "Make out with a stranger -- he must be gorgeous or you'll feel worse."

What do you think of J.Love's ring plan? Romantically pragmatic or a giant waving red flag? Tell us in the comments.
