It was a big night for some big names, with Denzel Washington, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Scarlett Johansson taking home their first Tony awards. ET has the theatrical details from the 64th Annual Tony Awards...
Washington won for Lead Actor in a Play for his role in Fences. Admitting that he didn't have a speech prepared, the actor said of the honor, "My mother always said, 'Man gives the award, but God gives the reward.'"
A very excited Zeta-Jones took the stage to accept the Tony Award for Lead Actress in a Musical. During her speech, she pointed to her husband Michael Douglas and said, "That man is a movie star and I get to sleep with him every night!"
Johansson won for Featured Actress in a Play for her role in A View From the Bridge while her husband Ryan Reynolds looked on from the audience. Another familiar face at the Tony Awards was Kristin Chenoweth who performed at the ceremony. "I want to thank Kristin Chenoweth who loaned me her eyelashes," Promises, Promises star Katie Finneran joked while accepting the award for Featured Actress in a Musical.
Oscar nominated 'Doubt' actress and Washington's costar in Fences, Viola Davis, won for Lead Actress in a Play. "I don't believe in happenstance," she said, crying through her acceptance speech. "I completely believe in the presence of God." Cate Blanchett presented the award for Best Revival of a Play that also went to Fences.
Another memorable quote from the evening came from Terry Johnson who won the Direction of a Musical award for his part in La Cage aux Folles. He jokingly said in his speech, "I'd like to thank my fellow nominees without which I would've prepared a speech." In addition, La Cage aux Folles won for Best Revival of a Musical and Douglas Hodge won Lead Actor in a Musical for his role in the performance.
The brothers of "Frasier," Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, got a bit emotional as they reunited onstage to present a Tony award. Another TV personality, Paula Abdul, presented Bill T. Jones with the Tony for Best Choreography for his work in Fela! Jay-Z and wife Beyonce gave Jones a standing ovation.
The winner for Best Play went to Red. In addition, Eddie Redmayne won earlier in the evening for Featured Actor in a Play for his role in Red.
The show also experienced some "Glee" as Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele sang in two separate performances.
The coveted award for Best Musical ended up going to the delighted cast and crew of Memphis.
