Bar Refaeli's Appearance in Israel Ad Irks Israel Defense Forces
Using the face of one of Israel's most famous exports to advertise tourism there seems like a logical marketing move. But supermodel Bar Refaeli's appearance in a new public relations campaign for her native Israel has some public officials hot and bothered -- for political reasons. Unlike most young Israelis, Bar Refaeli never served her compulsory time in the military. Instead, she dodged the service by marrying a friend of the family in 2007, then divorcing him, so as not to interrupt her successful modeling career.
A rep for the Israel Defense Forces has now complained publicly about the ad in a letter to the Foreign Ministry Director. The Huffington Post reports that Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai wrote: "The choice of a representative who did not serve in the military as an official presenter on behalf of Israel, conveys the message that we ignore and forgive evasion of enlistment, and encourages identification, among youths of both sexes, with the success of those who did not enlist …"
Bar's response? Kiss off, y'all: "You can use the clip for the Foreign Ministry or drop it, but my Instagram feed has more readers than Israel's most popular newspaper!"
